Name: Thehace Sundrir Door: Left Canon: Original Character Canon Point: searching out a dragon to earn her favor Age: 153 (approx mid-late twenties in human years) Appearance: PIC - Thehace is approximately 6'4" with a lean, cut figure. He has hazel eyes and ginger hair and freckles over his whole body. As an elf, he also has pointed that stick out past his longer hair. History: Thehace was born to an seafaring elvish peoples in the Feywilds. His people weren't always in the Feywilds, and in fact they had accidentally crossed an unseen faerie door centuries ago from the material plane into the Feywilds. The Feywild is a dangerous realm, however, and the elves found it difficult to make a home for themselves on any of the lands they encountered safely. As such, the travelers stuck to the seas and only came to land when desperate. Slowly, these travelers evolved into a life of piracy. They took what they needed from other ships or port towns as necessary. Eventually, they became one of the same dangers they had once feared in the Feywilds as they adapted to their new home.
It was in this society that Thehace was born to the leader of these travelers - the now named Pirate Queen Faelyn of the Moon Raiders. As for his father, no one in the Moon Raiders were permitted to talk about him after his disappearance from Thehace's life at the young age of three. Thehace's own memory of his father is blurry, but he has a somewhat hazy memory from his childhood that he'd hold onto as his compass later in life. He remembered a grove of some sort, an odd thing for him as his people rarely went into the wilds. He remembered a fight between his mother and father. And he remembered a voice that echoed in his mind ever since. A male voice, not belonging to his father. The voice had felt ethereal as it spoke - "We have a deal." While Thehace doesn't remember the events of that night in full detail beyond those hazy blurs, he knows that life for the Moon Raiders changed drastically after that night. The Pirate Queen had obtained an artifact that allowed them to enter the material plane. However, so changed by the Feywilds, the Moon Raiders had no desire to return home. Instead, the Moon Raiders would use this artifact over the next decades to plague the seas of the material plane and disappear back across the borders to safety.
Thehace never had happy memories of his mother, but he knows that his treatment at her hands worsened after the disappearance of his father. She would often blame him for his father no longer being in their lives, making Thehace too uncomfortable to even ask about the vague memory he had.
Instead, Thehace's life became about survival. At every turn, it seemed as though the 'training' his mother gave to him were thinly veiled attempts to kill him. His training at her hands was brutal, cruel, and painful. It drove Thehace to point of near defiance with his survival. Every accomplishment he had was a way to try to prove to his mother he deserved to live - and ultimately that he deserved her love. Nothing he ever did was good enough for the Pirate Queen, however. Eventually, he was given his own ship when he reached his thirties to more or less keep him out of her sight. Still, he strove to bring her back the greatest treasures he could find to earn her favor.
During his own adventures at sea, Thehace learned of his mother's pregnancy with a new child. In hopes of currying favor with his mother through his support of her new child, and perhaps a secret hope of new family, Thehace returned to the Moon Raiders to celebrate the birth of his new sister. The night of her birth, however, Thehace was woken by his first mate (nicknamed Mom). Mom told Thehace that the Pirate Queen was weary of the scourge on her name that he was and didn't want his sister to suffer the same embarrassment of having him for a brother. She had thus ordered him to be murdered and his ship seized while they had the chance.
Thehace, and what little of his crew could be alerted, snuck off his ship as they knew it was under careful watch for the attack. While Thehace's crew stealthily took charge of one of his mother's ships, Thehace dared to sneak into his mother's cabin. Tired and distracted from giving birth only hours ago, Thehace was able to steal his mothers artifact while the curtains from her desk while the curtains were drawn on her sleeping area. Escaping immediately to the ship his crew quietly took control of, Thehace and his crew sailed away before the Moon Raiders caught on that they weren't on their own ship any longer. Using the artifact, Thehace escaped to the material plane. The borders between the Feywilds and the material plane were not easy ones to cross, and it had been pure bad luck that had brought the Moon Raiders to the Feywilds in the first place. It would be centuries more before they'd find their way back to the material plane without the artifact, if they ever did at all. Thehace was safe.
Kind of.
Over the next century of his life, Thehace was constantly plagued with his mothers attempts to reach him and the artifact again. While physically traversing the planes wasn't the easiest task, sending messages across the borders wasn't as difficult. Still not simple, but his mother wasn't simple herself, either. She found various ways to reach various contacts over the next century in attempts to send people to find and kill Thehace and retrieve the artifact. The fact of the matter was, as long as Faelyn lived Thehace would never be safe again.
As such, Thehace turned his mind to the mystery of his father. Never believing the man to be dead, Thehace decided to dedicate his years to trying to track him down in his spare time. He continued his piracy for survival purposes, as piracy was all he knew how to do. And he was good at it. But his main goal has always been to find his father. It is with that in mind that Thehace chased down his latest lead on the man. Following rumors of an adventuring group that had won the favor of a dragon, Thehace decided to search this group out in hopes of meeting this dragon himself and earning a favor of her himself. Personality: Positive Trait: DETERMINED
One thing Thehace's youth taught him is to never give up. In the face of his own mother not wanting him, Thehace only ever sought to prove himself in her eyes. However, it's not just her acknowledgement Thehace craves. While he's not seeking glory necessarily, he does seek to simply be seen as a formidable force in the world. As such, when set to a task Thehace can become almost single-minded in his determination to see it through. It almost doesn't matter what the task is. This can make him dependable in a tight spot, and ultimately trustworthy. If Thehace says he'll accomplish something or do something for another, he will see it through. Anything less is failure in his mind. This does make him discerning of what promises he makes, as he wouldn't commit himself to something that he feels strongly against for whatever reason. Still, when he does commit himself to a goal or task, no matter how simple it is he will give his all into whatever he's doing.
Negative Trait: DETACHED
Thehace has never felt any real emotional security throughout his life. His mother's lack of love made his attempts to bond with her emotionally end very early in life. In fact, any attempts he did show were met with contempt and seen as weakness. Thus, Thehace learned to temper anything real he might feel. In early years, this made him quite a quiet and reserved child. But even that seemed to earn his mother's ire. As he grew up, Thehace learned to wrap himself in an armor of casual behaviors. He learned not just to temper his feelings, but to hide them behind a veneer of hedonism and indulgence. In this way, he's able to keep people at arms length. Even his first mate, Mom, has his trust but rarely sees the real emotions Thehace hides deep down. It keeps his relationships with most people shallow, both for fear of being caught out in another assasination attempt or having his emotions shut down yet again by others.
Negative Trait: DESPERATE
Deep down, there's a cloying desperation in Thehace to be loved. His hunt for his father is a testament to that desire, seeking the family he never had in hopes he might not only find love but earn it from his mother in the process. It's not just love he's desperate for, it's any sort of real closeness to others. At the same time he feels unsafe and unable to reveal his true feelings to others. The combination of both needs often leads Thehace to develop shallow relationships he wants to take deeper but is too fearful to do so. This can cause Thehace to sometimes take drastic measures, such as showering people in gifts, to try to create a sense of appreciation for them that he can't physically express.
Negative Trait: INDULGENT
Struggling to deal with his paranoia, anxiety, and inability to connect with others, Thehace has taken to indulging bad habits in order to cope with his life. The primary way this manifests is in his substance abuse. Thehace drinks heavily and indulges in drugs on a near nightly basis. He finds it difficult to sleep without doing these things. Additionally, he'll engage in more risk-taking behaviors in his day to day life. Potentially spending more money than he should at a time or gambling with his ship on the line. Or more adrenaline chasing type habits, such as sailing into storms, just to prove he can do them. Powers and Abilities: Thehace has a number of abilities natural to him as an elf. He can see better in darkness, has higher perception than others due to his keen senses, is more difficult to charm, and doesn't need to sleep but rather goes into a trance and will feel fully rested after only four hours. Additionally, Thehace is an Eladrin elf - meaing he's an elf from the Feywilds. Due to this, Thehace innately knows the spell misty step. ( sidenote: as a homebrew world, Thehace's Eladrin elf doesn't follow the DND rules in that he is not seasonally attached like rules-as-written Eladrins are and thus his misty step does not get an added effect that's related to the season he's attached to. also, since he's not seasonally attached his Trance cannot change his season or proficienies. )
As an elf, Thehace has a natural affinity for magic. As a wizard, Thehace has focused in and honed his natural affinity with magic to suit his needs. Specifically, Thehace has followed the traditions of arcane elven warriors in bladesinging magic. Bladesingers invoke the magic of the Bladesong to hone their agility, dexterity, and focus to give themselves greater speed on the battlefield. This also increases their defensive capabilites and concentration on their other magic. And with the time he's spent training over the century, he's accessed the deeper magic of Bladesong to the point where he can use his magic like a shield to reduce injury to himself at the cost of reducing his ability to spend his magic on spells. Aside from his bladesinging, Thehace is a skilled wizard and knows a number of spells and how to study and learn more magic on his own. A list of his spells can be found here. His spells do primarily focus on helping hone his skills in a fight, such as with booming blade that adds thunder damage to his sword attacks or haste to further enhance his speed in battle (at the expense of potential exhaustion).
Aside from his affinity with magic and learning magic, Thehace has worked hard to enhance his physical prowess so as not to rely entiely on the Bladesong in battle. He trained with the other pirates on the ship in in swordplay and focused on his footwork to help him with more agile and defensive movements. He's also learned how to take advantage of distraction or weakness for more precise and dangerous attacks.
Outside of fighting, Thehace has skills with navigational tools and operating traditional style water vehicles. He also knows how to speak Thieves' Cant smoothly. He can pick locks and is proficient with thieves' tools as well.
